• Dawson Casting: For the adults, Henry Fonda and Lucille Ball were well into their fifties at the time this movie was filmed and portraying a real-life couple who were about a generation younger than they. Lucille Ball even portrayed a woman who was still fertile enough to have her 9th child!
• Dueling Works:
  • Around the same time the original film was produced, Sherwood Schwartz conceived a TV sitcom about a large blended family, titled Yours and Mine. Paramount threatened him with a lawsuit, even though his series pitch predated the film. Still, the film's success persuaded ABC to Follow the Leader and produce Schwartz's sitcom... albeit with its title changed to The Brady Bunch.
  • The remake had this with Cheaper by the Dozen 2.
• Writing Around Trademarks: It's referenced in Licorice Pizza as Under One Roof.
