- Awesome, Dear Boy: Henry Winkler wanted to work with Adam Sandler after being name-dropped in "The Chanukah Song".
- Career Resurrection: Prior to this movie, Henry Winkler was still living in the shadow of Fonzie. After the film came out, Winkler gained new appreciation from a younger generation that did not grow up watching Happy Days (if they were even alive when it originally aired), allowing him to have a respectable career as a character actor, and an Emmy Award-winner to boot.
- Playing Against Type: This was the first film in which Henry Winkler transitioned from playing the archetypal cool guy of Fonzie to comically desperate losers, which has since defined his post-Happy Days career.
- So My Kids Can Watch: Kathy Bates originally passed on the role of Helen "Mama" Boucher, but relented when her niece told her that she was a huge Adam Sandler fan.
- What Could Have Been:
- The movie was initially conceived as a 1950s period piece taking place in New England shot in black-and-white, before making it a present-day piece in Louisiana.
- The Mud Dogs were originally called "the Craw-Dads".
