  • Awesome, Dear Boy: John Wayne helped cast Rock Hudson, as Wayne had previously wanted to star alongside Hudson in The Alamo.
  • Box Office Bomb: Budget, $7,115,000. Box office, $8,000,000. According to Fox records the film required $12,425,000 in rentals to break even but by December 11, 1970 the film had made only $8,775,000 which resulted in a loss for the studio.
  • Channel Hop: Warner Bros. originally bought the rights to make the film in 1961 for Henry King to direct.
  • Creator Backlash: Rock Hudson admitted in a 1980 interview that he thought the movie was "crap", and attributed its good reception only to the fact that it immediately followed John Wayne's previous film True Grit, which was a smash success. However, he had fond memories of the filming because he became a close friend of John Wayne and Roman Gabriel.
  • Completely Different Title:
    • In Portuguese, the film is known in Portugal as Nunca Foram Vencidos and in Brazil as Jamais Foram Vencidos, both meaning "(They) Never Were Defeated."
    • In France it was known as Les géants de l'Ouest ("The Giants of the West"). One has to wonder if it was an Actor Allusion to one of Rock Hudson's previous movies, Giant.
    • In Italy it was known as I due invincibili ("The Two Invincibles").
    • In Spanish, it was known in Spain as Los indestructibles ("The Indestructibles") and in Latin America as Los invencibles ("The Invincibles").
  • The Danza: John Wayne as Col. John Henry Thomas.
  • Dueling-Stars Movie: John Wayne vs. Rock Hudson. And given the film's plot, sometimes they are literally dueling onscreen.
  • Dyeing for Your Art: Before filming began, John Wayne had to lose most of the weight he had put on in order to play Rooster Cogburn in True Grit.
  • Uncredited Role: The original script was by Stanley Hough and Casey Robinson, neither of whom are credited in the final film.
