Trivia / The Simpsons S1 E9 "Life on the Fast Lane"

Go To

  • Creator's Favorite Episode: In a 2000 Entertainment Weekly article, Matt Groening ranked this episode as his second favorite episode of all time, behind "Bart the Daredevil".
  • First Appearance: Lenny Leonard, Helen Lovejoy, and Jacques.
  • Harpo Does Something Funny: Albert Brooks improvised almost all of his dialogue, producing over three hours of material. Marge's laugh during her bowling lesson was an ad-libbed, natural laugh by Julie Kavner, who was laughing at something he had just said. The line "four onion rings!" was one of the many lines that Brooks ad-libbed and when saying it, Jacques loses his French accent.
  • Urban Legend: In March 2004, a prankster sent to newspaper columnist Abigail Van Beuren (of "Dear Abby") a letter about the exact same situation featured in the episode. Abby didn't notice anything amiss, but an editor who read the March 15 column before publication did, resulting in that edition being unpublished by most newspapers that carried the column. This incident has been catalogued by Snopes.
  • Working Title: Originally, instead of a Frenchman named Jacques, Marge would meet a Swede named Bjorn and the episode was named "Bjorn to be Wild". This explains the episode's alternate title, "Jacques to be Wild".
