- California Doubling: The majority of filming was done in Kenya, standing in for Uganda.
- Fake Nationality: The majority of the Ugandan characters are played by Kenyans, including Joseph Olita as the titular dictator, while Dr. Oloya is played by Guyanese-born British actor Thomas Baptiste.
- Looping Lines: All the actors had to re-record their lines as the microphones used during filming were of poor quality.
- Role Reprise: Joseph Olita, who played Idi Amin, later reprised the role in a cameo for the 1991 film Mississippi Masala, about the 1972 deportation of the Ugandan Asians.
