- Dyeing for Your Art: Adrien Brody did prison exercises, went on an all-protein diet and did sessions in an isolation tank to prepare for playing a war veteran.
- Enforced Method Acting:
- Adrien Brody asked to be locked in the body drawer when they weren't filming, so he could get a sense of his character's despair. He lost it during filming and thus his real reaction is captured on tape.
- Keira Knightley had food poisoning right before her audition. She jokes that probably helped her land the part of a sickly alcoholic.
- Fake American:
- This marks Keira Knightley's first time attempting an American accent.
- And also Daniel Craig, who is more convincing than Keira.
- Playing Against Type: It's quite a surprise that Jennifer Jason Leigh - who would have played the Jackie or Jean type character in the 90s - is the only nice, good doctor in a Bedlam House.
- Playing with Character Type: Keira Knightley at this point in her career played a lot of brash Jerk with a Heart of Gold characters (when she wasn't doing period movies). Here this character is a lot darker than other examples, and being the first time she'd played a Fake American.
- Typecasting: Adrien Brody as a Nice Guy with a whole lot of trouble heaped on him.
- What Could Have Been:
- The sex scene between Jackie and Jack ran longer but American test audiences disliked the nudity, and it was edited down.
- Mark Wahlberg and Colin Farrell were both considered for the lead before Adrien Brody won it.
