• Acting for Two: Right at the beginning of the first episode, a young Cleopatra VII asks her tutor Theodotus which of her female ancestors she resembles the most, and he says that she looks a lot like her great-grandmother. Cue the flashback to the very young version of that great-grandmother Cleopatra III... played by the very same actress, Michelle Newell.
• Follow the Leader: This was The BBC's attempt to repeat the success of I, Claudius.
• Keep Circulating the Tapes: Although the show has never been rebroadcast or released on DVD, clips were featured in a 2015 BBC documentary about how Cleopatra VII has been portrayed and presented in film and on television.
