- Ability over Appearance: Meryl Streep was nearly turned down for not being considered beautiful enough (Ursula Andress was the first choice). She however lobbied for the part (according to legend, threw herself on the ground begging for it) and impressed enough to change their minds.
- Dyeing for Your Art: Meryl Streep had to lose a lot of weight to film the scenes in Yugoslavia at the concentration camp.
- Fake Nationality:
- Meryl Streep as a Polish immigrant. In addition to having to learn the Polish accent, she learned the language as well as German for the role.
- British-Canadian Eugene Lipinski as a Polish professor.
- One-Take Wonder: Meryl Streep did the final scene in one take and refused to do it again, saying that as a mother, she found it too painful and emotionally draining.
- Star-Making Role: This led to Kevin Kline making it big with A Fish Called Wanda shortly after (he was cast in that after John Cleese saw this film).
- What Could Have Been: When William Styron was writing the novel, he envisioned Ursula Andress in the role of Sophie. Barbra Streisand and Natalie Wood were also considered.
