YMMV / Sophie's Choice

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The beautiful love theme composed by Marvin Hamlisch.
  • Complete Monster: The nameless Nazi officer, who encounters Sophie with her children while processing prisoners at the trains to the concentration camps to be sent for liquidation or labor. Mocking Sophie in a perverse manner, he decides to force the titular choice on her: which of her beloved children will remain with her and which will be gassed. When Sophie cannot choose, he orders both children to be gassed, only relenting for sheer amusement when Sophie chooses her daughter to die.
  • Ho Yay: The love triangle between Nathan, Sophie, and Stingo is made more complicated by rather romantically charged scenes between Stingo and Nathan. Stingo talks at length about how he loves both of them and if one was to watch many of the scenes between the three of them out of context, one might easily believe they were in a polyamorous relationship.
  • It Was His Sled: Pretty much everybody knows what the famous choice is.
  • Signature Scene: The titular choice is not only by far the most famous scene in the movie, but arguably the most iconic moment of Meryl Streep's career.
  • The Woobie: Sophie and her two children. Sophie is forced by Nazi troops at random to make the sadistic choice as to which one of her children will live (or have both of them killed). Her daughter Eva is then taken straight to her death in the crematorium, and her son Jan is taken to a children's concentration camp, but never is shown to be reunited with his mother.
