Trivia / Shattered Glass

Go To

  • Acclaimed Flop: In spite of great reviews, the movie was not widely released (opening in, at most, 215 theaters) and thus failed to recoup its already low $6 million budget.
  • Box Office Bomb: Budget, $6 million. Box office, $2.9 million.
  • Completely Different Title: In Latin America the film is named El Fabulador (The Storyteller) and in Spain it was given the more fitting title El Precio De La Verdad (The Price Of The Truth).
  • DVD Commentary: The track features writer/director Billy Ray and the actual Chuck Lane.
  • Enforced Method Acting: Before the scene where the Young Republicans harass and chase a woman out of their hotel room, the director instructed the actors playing the Republicans to glare silently at the actress without speaking to her before the scene, to make her look that much more scared and upset.
  • Fake American: Canadian Hayden Christensen as Stephen Glass. New Zealand native Melanie Lynskey also plays his co-worker Amy.
  • Reality Is Unrealistic: The filmmakers had to add a card at the beginning of the movie explaining that the New Republic had the youngest staff of any major publication, as initial viewers did not buy that a newsroom could be that young. They also had to dub in the voice of a security guard letting Glass back into the office, as viewers didn't think he would be able to get back in after his badge was confiscated, but Lane affirms that the doors weren't locked.
