Trivia / Pleasant Green Universe

Go To

  • Acting for Two: Numerous actors play multiple roles across the series and even occasionally in the same installment such as Mark Bazely playing both Vicar Wilmarth (or rather the man impersonating him, also known as "John Silence") and Dr. Willet in Whisperer In Darkness, facilitated by affecting an American accent for the latter. Averted in the case of Nicola Walker's characters Mary Lairre and Eleanor Peck, who are revealed in Shadow Over Innsmouth to be the same person. In fact, given the overall espionage theme of the series, particularly the fact that John Silence was working with The Department and may or may not also be "Martin Willis" who has a cybernetic brain whose identity can be easily rewritten this trope may not apply to most of the instances at all.
    • Exaggerated to the point of self-parody in the second Aldrich Kemp series, wherein the Underwood Sisters and Forsaken McTeague, all of whom are played by Jana Carpenter, join forces to attack one of the villains on the Trans-Siberian Railway.
  • Divorced Installment: The aliens in Fugue State appear to be the same ones from Simpson's short-lived run on Journey into Space, though the Lovecraft Investigations series instead implies that they were, in fact the Mi-go.
  • The Other Darrin: Alice is played by a different actress when she appears again in Innsmouth. And while they're (probably) not the same person, Zadok Allen and Dr. Allen are played by different actors despite allegedly being identical twins.
  • Production Posse: Simpson regularly casts Jana Carpenter (his wife), Nicola Walker, Phoebe Fox, Tim McInnerny and Ferdinand Kingsley.
  • Real-Life Relative: Nicola Walker and Barnaby Kay are married in real life, and their characters here (Matthew Heawood and Eleanor Peck) have multiple scenes together leading to in-universe Ship Tease. Phoebe Fox (Parker) and Kyle Soller (Casey/Obed Marsh) are also married, though they don't have any scenes together. The child's voice on Akely's ham radio, implied to be one of the Green Children of Woolpit, is also played by Edie Simpson, daughter of Julian Simpson and Jana Carpenter (Kennedy). Harry Kay, son of Barnaby Kay (Matthew Heawood) and Nicola walker (Eleanor Peck) plays a young Charles Dexter Ward in the recordings made by Doctor Willet in The Case of Charles Dexter Ward.
  • What Happened to the Mouse??:
    • The whereabouts of Ezra Whedon are never mentioned after Kennedy goes to Mosul.
    • Two other journalists working for the same company as Matthew and Kennedy named Catharine Melman and Kevin Dobbs are briefly mentioned at the very beginning of the first episode of "Charles Dexter Ward" and then never referenced again, apart from a brief name-drop of Catherine in the final bonus episode of "Innsmouth". (One suspects Simpson realised himself that they'd been forgotten.)
