• Executive Meddling: A truly bizarre example:
  • The film has two different sections, one urban and one rural. the break-off points comes with the attack (and implied rape) of a girl that leads the hero into a violent altercation after which he has a heartfelt discussion with his friend describing the city as garbage. Originally this section was to have come at the end of the film. Ray wanted that conversation to be the reason why Robert Ryan's character returns to Ida Lupino.
  • Howard Hughes who ran RKO at the time looked at the film and ordered a recut without any explanation whatsoever. The recut removed some scenes and changed the order entirely.
