  • California Doubling: The show is set in Austin, but filmed in Los Angeles. This has drawn some criticism from Austinites and the Texas film industry.
  • The Danza:
  • Produced By Castmember: Rob Lowe is a co-executive producer.
  • Queer Character, Queer Actor:
    • Paul Strickland is transgender and is played by Brian Michael Smith, who is also transgender.
    • T.K. Strand is gay and is played by Ronen Rubinstein who is bisexual, and in fact cited his experiences playing T.K. on the show as helping him understand himself.
    • Carlos Reyes is gay and played by Rafael Silva, who is also gay.
  • Real-Life Relative:
    • Jon Foster, who plays Dustin, the ex of Michelle's (played by Liv Tyler) missing sister, is Liv's real life brother-in-law.
    • Owen's half-brother on the show is played by Rob Lowe’s real life brother, Chad.
    • Sierra McClain’s character, Grace, has two sisters played by her real life ones, China Anne and Lauryn.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: The COVID-19 global outbreak appears in-universe.
    • Liv's character had to be Put on a Bus because she was in London at the time filming on season 2 startednote .
    • Masks are worn throughout season 2.
    • The related pandemic mandates affects multiple people within the series: several minor characters (and those related to the main cast) find their jobs and businesses failing; another character's cancer gets affected by him contracting the virus; and a group is even seen quarantining, social distancing, and having Zoom calls.
  • Recycled Script: A sequence from the mother show involving a bigoted individual refusing treatment from the diverse cast of the firehouse is reused in the Pilot of Lone Star.

  • You Look Familiar: Three cast members previously appeared on 9-1-1:
    • Mark Elias (Tim Rosewater) played a Runaway Groom in the season two premiere, "Under Pressure".
    • Erin Karpluk (Pepper) reprises her role from the holiday special, Christmas Spirit.
    • Julian Works, who portrays Mateo, starred in the episode "7.1" as a Delinquent named Marvin. The crossover episode reveals that the two are cousins. The 4th season’s “Double Trouble” has the two of them interacting properly, though over the phone.
