Trivia / Myst III: Exile

Go To

  • B-Team Sequel: Cyan was reluctant to make another Myst game so soon after Riven, the making of which was an arduous process that took four years. Hence, this game was made by Presto Studios instead.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: Owing to the game being published by Ubisoft, and they being unwilling to sell the game in a digital medium, the only way to play it up until 2018 was to buy a used copy or pirate it (assuming you could get it to work on modern computers, that is). In 2018, it was announced that the rights had been secured and that the game was going to be updated to work on modern computers and made available digitally on both Steam and Good Old Games as part of the 25th anniversary Kickstarter.
  • The Other Darrin: Katran was played by Sheila Goold and voiced by Rengin Altay in Riven. She was played by Maria Galante in Exile.
  • Promoted Fanboy: Brad Dourif, already an accomplished film actor, had long been an avid fan of Myst and Riven. When he heard that auditions were being held for actors to play a new character in Myst III, well, you get the picture.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The original outline for the game had Yeesha as a grown woman instead of a baby. That version of Yeesha would appear in future games.
    • Myst III and IV underwent massive changes in development including a change in publishers from Mattel to Ubisoft and a number swap. The original developers for Myst III were DreamForge Intertainment while Presto Studios began work on a proposed Myst IV. Under DreamForge, Myst III's story would feature the return of Sirrus and Achaenar. For unknown reasons, Presto's game ended up as Myst III while DreamForge's project including the plot was shifted to Myst IV. And then Ubisoft purchased the entire Myst franchise. Ultimately, Ubisoft published Presto's Myst III but, again for unknown reasons, decided to restart Myst IV from scratch with an internal team.
