- Distanced from Current Events: Apocalypse suffered badly on account of its inability to escape the shadow of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Its release in Japan (originally March 16, 2011 — just six days after the earthquake) was canceled outright, as was its release in New Zealand after the Christchurch earthquake in February, and in other markets it was delayed and all advertising was pulled.
- Dueling Works: The first game was one with Excite Truck. Both were games motorsport in large, natural environments, and were launch titles or near-launch titles for their respective consoles of the PlayStation 3 and Wii in late 2006.
- Franchise Killer: After the underperformance of Apocalypse despite positive reviews, the only MotorStorm game has been an RC spinoff for the PlayStation Vita that was already in production by that point. Since then, the franchise has been dormant.
