Trivia / Minari

  • Award Category Fraud:
    • Alan Kim was nominated at the BAFTAs as a supporting actor, even though he's the main character. Granted, it's an Ensemble Cast, but he's still the most prominent role. It wouldn't be as noticeable were it not for Steven Yeun and Yeri Han competing for leading awards.
    • Similar to The Farewell the previous year, the film was nominated for (and won) Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes, despite a significant amount of English dialogue and the fact that it is not a foreign film. This led to severe backlash against the Globes, particularly given films in this category are ineligible to compete for Best Motion Picture awards. (The Oscars use the Best International Film category, which excludes U.S. films like Minari, and the film was indeed nominated for Best Picture there.)
  • Billing Displacement: Steven Yeun and Yeri Han are billed before Alan Kim, when the latter is the most prominent role.
