Trivia / Mark Wills

  • Distanced from Current Events: Downplayed with "19 Somethin'". As the song references the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, a few stations momentarily pulled it after the similar Columbia disaster in February 2003. However, the dip in airplay was so negligible that the song didn't even fall from #1 on Billboard. (It did fall to #2 for one week on Radio & Records, allowing Terri Clark's "I Just Wanna Be Mad" to get the top spot, but even on that chart "19 Somethin'" returned to the top the following week.)
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: His 2006 single "Hank" was withdrawn after only a few weeks (supposedly due to negative reception), and thus never put on an album.
  • Life Imitates Art: In a 1998 interview with American Country Countdown, Wills said that he actually passed by a homeless man on a street corner when listening to the demo of "Don't Laugh at Me" in his car.
  • Network to the Rescue: Wills was on Clint Black's Equity label when it closed, and was partway into making his album Familiar Stranger.
