- Ability over Appearance: Rowan Atkinson is not exactly the large, broad-shouldered man who was described in the books and accurately embodied by the likes of Jean Gabin, Gino Cervi, Bruno Cremer and GĂ©rard Depardieu in this regard, but his performance has been praised.
- California Doubling: Set in Paris of The '50s, but, copying a move made by the Bruno Cremer series, had to be shot in Budapest because of how the real Paris had developed in the years since.
- Fake Nationality: The British Rowan Atkinson as the French Maigret, and virtually everyone else. Also, there's the Irish Aidan McArdle as French judge Comeliau.
- Playing Against Type: Rowan Atkinson is mostly known for his rubber-faced comedic roles such as in Blackadder or Mr. Bean. He went completely "straight" to play Jules Maigret, and what little humor there is is entirely deadpan.
- Promoted Fanboy: Atkinson is an avid reader of the material."I have been a devourer of the Maigret novels for many years and I'm very much looking forward to playing such an intriguing character at work in Paris during a fascinating period in its history."
