Trivia / Maid Marian and Her Merry Men

Go To

  • Descended Creator: Tony Robinson as the Sheriff of Nottingham.
  • He Also Did: Mark Billingham, who played Gary (and also co-wrote the series 4 episode "Tunnel Vision"), largely retired from acting in the late nineties and is now better known as a crime novelist.
  • Inspiration for the Work: Tony Robinson came up with the idea of the show, after watching his daughter playing with other kids and it occurred to him that if she had been in Robin Hood's gang, she would had been the one who was running it, not Robin Hood.
  • Non-Singing Voice: While certain actors, such as Danny John-Jules, provide their own singing voices, several characters are dubbed over in the song numbers by professional singers. The show doesn't even try to hide this fact — most of the singing voices sound nothing like the characters' speaking voices and Marian notably gets a distinct American accent when singing. This is mostly ignored but occasionally played for laughs and on occasion Lampshaded, such as when Marian interrupts a song number by telling the peasants to "stop miming!"
  • Playing Against Type: Tony Robinson's most famous role is the imbecilic Bumbling Sidekick Baldrick in Blackadder, a complete 180 from the savvy, intelligent Sheriff. In fact, one gets the feeling that Robinson fancied playing Blackadder for a change (with Gary and Grahame as his Baldricks).
  • Real Life Writes the Hairstyle: Kate Longergan did not wear her wig for season four, which saw Marian with short hair, which was her own natural hair.
  • Uncredited Role: Richard Curtis did uncredited script editing work.
  • Written for My Kids: Tony Robinson wrote the series largely for his daughter, as he felt that there were hardly any shows for girls at the time, while his son had shows like The A-Team.
