  • Creator Backlash: In this 2016 Business Standard interview, director Karan Johar admits that, in retrospect, the theme of the movie is "very unusually silly," and "Everything was wrong, but it was written with so much conviction that it made sense." He also relates that when veteran Bollywood actress Shabana Azmi called him out for having Rahul fall in love with Anjali Sharma only after she wears a sari, grows out her hair, and becomes conventionally beautiful, he admitted to her that he has no justification for it.
  • Real-Life Relative: Kajol (Anjali Sharma) and Rani Mukherji (Tina Malhotra) are second cousinsExplanation .
  • Star-Making Role: For Rani Mukherji.
  • Those Two Actors: Several:
  • Throw It In!: During the filming of Rahul and Anjali Sharma's reunion scene, Karan Johar told Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol to improvise and rehearse the reactions they might use. He secretly taped them, and was so pleased with what he saw that he put it in the film.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The film's two major plots — the plot featuring the Love Triangle between Rahul, Anjali Sharma, and Tina from the first half, and the plot featuring the widower Rahul and his young daughter Anjali Khanna from the second half — were originally two separate, completely unrelated stories, until Karan Johar decided to combine them into one story.
    • Twinkle Khanna was the original choice for Tina Malhotra. After she turned it down, other actresses such as Tabu, Aishwarya Rai, Urmila Matondkar, Karisma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, and Shilpa Shetty were subsequently offered the role before Rani Mukherji was cast.
    • Chandrachur Singh, Ajay Devgn, and Saif Ali Khan were offered the role of Aman Mehra before Salman Khan was cast. Upon the film's success, Saif regretted turning down the part, which later prompted him to star opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Kal Ho Naa Ho.
    • Karan Johar wanted Rani Mukherji's trademark husky voice to be dubbed.
