Trivia / Jerry Lawler

Go To

  • Actor Allusion:
    • As with most wrestlers turned announcers, things from his career are referred to at times. For example, during the Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels match at WrestleMania XII, Lawler asked "How'd he kick out of a piledriver?!" The piledriver, of course, is his finisher.
    • In the movie Girls Gone Dead, his character kills the villain with a piledriver.
  • The Cast Showoff: Lawler is a decent cartoonist, which was put into an angle with him and the Ultimate Warrior in the mid-90's when Warrior's comic series came out. That portrait Lawler offered Warrior? He actually did paint it himself. He also did the illustrations for Mick Foley's WWE Christmas-themed children's book.
  • Died During Production: Nearly hit him hard, as he suffered a heart attack during an episode of RAW in 2012. Fortunately, he survived. It did put an end to his feud with Michael Cole.
  • Enforced Method Acting: Lawler has admitted saying, "That's it, he's dead," after Mick Foley went through the Hell in a Cell roof was not trying to be dramatic as a commentator but legit concern.
  • Money, Dear Boy: Lawler has admitted in a 2011 interview that he hasn't been interested in calling matches for years and the only reason he still does announcing these days is for the paycheck. That hasn't stopped him from crying to Vince and arranging to have Matt Stryker downsized for mocking his ignorance.
  • Real Song Theme Tune
    • (in WWE): Modest Mussorgsky's "The Bogatyr Gates (in the Capital in Kiev)" (from his famous piano suite Pictures At An Exhibition. It's the same music Harley Race and Haku used during their runs as the "King of the WWF.")
    • (in ECW in 1997): Roger Miller's "King of the Road" and Marc Cohn's "Walking in Memphis"
  • Romance on the Set: Lawler many dates with women in the wrestling business are infamous, with The Kat being the most publicized case, most others being open secrets.
  • Screwed by the Network: The 2007 version of Memphis Wrestling was screwed by WWE, who didn't want Lawler working with VH1 and Hulk Hogan
  • What Could Have Been: According to Jerry's book, It's Good To Be The King... Sometimes, Jerry almost managed to get Elvis Presley (yes, that Elvis Presley) involved with Memphis Wrestling in some capacity, and even got to speak with his father, Vernon Presley, on the phone to iron out some details about it. Unfortunately, this was 1977, and we all know what kind of condition Elvis was in by then - in fact, a few weeks after that phone call, Memphis was down a King.
    • When Jerry walked out on WWE in 2001, he claimed he'd been sitting on a larger contract offer from WCW for several months. He'd have probably shown up there if the company wasn't six weeks from sundown at the time.
