• Dueling Shows: The show frequently gets compared with Deadwood, another gritty revisionist television Western.
• Fake Nationality:
  • "The Swede" is actually Norwegian. Not only that, Christopher Heyerdahl, the actor that portrays him, is Canadian (although he does have Norwegian heritage).
  • Irish actor Colm Meaney playing New Yorker 'Doc' Durant (although the character does have Irish heritage).
  • Aussie Robin McLeavy as American frontier girl Eva.
  • Midwestern preacher Ruth is portrayed by South African Kasha Kropinski.
  • Englishman Jake Weber as Wyoming governor John Allen Campbell.
• Irony as She Is Cast: According to an article in TV Guide, one of the reasons Anson Mount got the role of Bohannon was that the producers thought he had a rugged look to him and wasn't a typical Hollywood Pretty Boy. However, One of Mount's first major roles was as the Pretty Boy love interest (to Britney Spears, no less) in Britney's best-forgotten film début Crossroads.
• Screwed by the Network: AMC tried to kill it for good by dumping season three on Saturday nights, pretty much the worst night on the schedule for anyone. Ironically, it actually outdid Low Winter Sun despite the latter having the suddenly cushy post-Breaking Bad slot, and ended up getting a fourth season because of that (although still on Saturdays).
