• Anime First: While the manga adaptation was released before the anime first aired, it was mainly promotional material for the anime.
• Playing Against Type: Aki Toyosaki, Chiaki Omigawa and Mamiko Noto are playing characters far from their normal fare.
• Write Who You Know: Screenwriter Mari Okada based the character of Satsuki (Ohana's mother) on her own mother, who was a considerably more unstable and abusive person towards her. Ironically, when shown the anime, Okada's mother did not connect the dots and completely missed the overtones her daughter wrote into the character.
