Trivia / Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities

Go To

  • Author Appeal: del Toro, a known enthusiast of the works of H. P. Lovecraft, has two of his short stories, Pickman's Model and The Dreams in the Witch House, adapted into episode of the show.
  • Awesome, Dear Boy: Eric André really wanted to work with Panos Cosmatos due to being a huge fan of Mandy (2018), telling his agent to stalk him to find out what his next project would be.
  • Fake American:
    • English actor Ben Barnes and British Canadian David Hewlett play the New England natives William Thurber and Masson in ‘Pickman’s Model’ and ‘Graveyard Rats’ respectively.
    • The English Andrew Lincoln plays American Ornithologist Edgar in "The Murmuring".
  • Production Posse:
    • Aside from executive producing alongside his usual producer J. Miles Dale, the show sees del Toro working with some of his regular collaborators such as Guillermo Navarro (his cinematographer on Hellboy (2004), Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and Pacific Rim, here directing “Lot 36”) and David S. Goyer (screenwriter for Blade II, here writing “The Autopsy”).
    • Jennifer Kent reunites with her Babadook star Essie Davis for “The Murmuring”.
    • Panos Cosmatos reworking with his Mandy (2018) co-writer Aaron Stewart-Ahn.
  • Recycled Script: Weirdly, the first two episodes have the same basic premise: a man who makes a living selling dead people's belongings needs a big score because they're in debt to gangsters. In the course of obtaining valuable artifacts belonging to former military men, they learn of far more lucrative treasures, the pursuit of which leads to them being attacked by dead people reanimated by tentacled monsters.
  • Shout-Out: to Crimson Peak with a teacup in the Sharpes' china pattern (Royal Crown Derby Imari 2451) appearing in The Viewing and Agatha from Lot 36 wearing what seems to be Lucille Sharpe's cameo brooch. Lot 36 being set in Buffalo could arguably be a shout-out to both that and Nightmare Alley (2021).
  • What Could Have Been: Guillermo del Toro was slated to direct at least one episode of the show, but the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in delays for his other projects, thus creating a schedule conflict. He instead agreed to provide an intro for each episode.
  • Working Title: The series was originally known as 10 After Midnight.
  • Write What You Know: del Toro based part of "Lot 36" on his own experience of having his storage unit sold out from under him, and begging with the man who now owned it to get his things back.
