- Referenced by...: Characters in Sutcliff's later novel The Shining Company camp out in the ruins of Castellum. Set around 600 CE, the descendants of the Votadini believe that the site was inhabited by probably-werewolves and is now likely to be haunted by werewolf ghosts.
- Megan Whalen Turner's The King of Attolia also opens on a young soldier confined to quarters awaiting judgement for disgracing himself on the job, and idly contemplating suicide. Costis is certainly modelled after Sutcliff's soldier protagonists, but this may or may not be a deliberate reference.
