Trivia / Flightplan (2005)

• Inspiration for the Work: Peter A. Dowling had the idea in 1999 on a phone conversation with a friend. His original pitch for producer Brian Grazer involved a man who worked on airport security doing a business trip from the United States to Hong Kong, and during the flight his son went missing.
• Irony as She Is Cast: Sean Bean and Peter Sarsgaard both have a fear of flying.
• Playing with Character Type: Sean Bean was cast to subvert his typecasting as a villain, and mislead audiences into thinking he was part of the villainous plot.
• Technology Marches On: This film came out two years too early for what little plausibility the villains' plot may have had to be completely blown to hell by the rise of modern social media and smartphones. Just one look at Kyle's blog — or even a Google search of her name — would reveal enough evidence supporting her story to cause the crew to overrule Carson and look deeper.
• What Could Have Been:
  • The film was originally going to star Sean Penn.
  • Portia de Rossi and Christina Ricci were each offered the role of Kyle Pratt but turned it down.
