Trivia / Fist of Fury

Go To

  • The Cast Showoff: Robert Baker (Petrov) was a student and friend of Bruce Lee's and was recommended for the role by Lee.
  • Completely Different Title: The Chinese Connection and The Iron Hand (America).
  • Descended Creator: Writer/director Lo Wei plays Inspector Lo.
  • Dueling Works:
    • Had to contend in the box office with Shaw Brothers' The Deadly Knives, another movie released in 1972 about righteous Chinese heroes who take a stand against Japanese thugs. Both movies have a Chinese businessman character who became Les Collaborateurs serving his Japanese bosses, gratuitous frontal nudity for no discernible reason, and a Roaring Rampage of Revenge as their climaxes.
    • Its sequels had one, between the "official" sequel New Fist of Fury starring Jackie Chan, and Fist of Fury II starring Bruce Li.
  • Fake Russian: Robert Baker as Petrov.
  • Hostility on the Set:
    • According to the book I am Jackie Chan: My life in Action, Chan observed an argument on the set between Bruce Lee and director Lo Wei. When it looked like the fight would get physical, Lo hid behind his wife, Liu Liang-Hua. She was eventually able to calm Lee down. Lee never worked with the director again.
    • While filming in a park, Lo had to contend with local street gangs, whose leaders would demand payment for using "their bit" of the road. The protection money was usually paid, much to the annoyance of Lee, who had to be physically restrained from attacking them.
  • Killed by Request: The film originally ended with Chen escaping justice, as his real-life counterpart had done. Bruce Lee insisted that he face the consequences of his actions, hence the Bolivian Army Ending.
  • Looping Lines: Sync sound was not widely used in Hong Kong cinema for a long time so the voices (even on the original Cantonese track) for the film were dubbed. Strangely, Petrov's lines (English lines, no less) were dubbed by Bruce Lee for some reason.
  • Stunt Double:
    • Jackie Chan doubled for Chikara Hashimoto for the scene where Chen kicks Suzuki out of the window. He took the kick and flew several feet. Bruce Lee immediately checked to see if he was okay. Chan also played a guard Lee kills in Enter the Dragon.
    • Wah Yuen doubled for Lee in the fight scene between Chen and Yoshida where Chen does a somersault.
