Trivia / Clonus

Go To

  • Completely Different Title: In Brazil, the movie received the name Romance ou Pesadelo (Romance or Nightmare).
  • Executive Meddling: The film was originally distributed as "Parts: The Clonus Horror" due to this. The DVD of this movie now uses the creator's original title of simply "Clonus".
  • He Also Did: This was Robert S. Fiveson's only feature film, but he later went on to a successful career directing television documentaries, including several episodes of In Search of....
  • Hostility on the Set: Fiveson said the biggest snag while making the movie was that one of the leading actors was difficult to work with and didn't get along with his costars. Although Fiveson wouldn't identify who he meant, circumstantial evidence suggests it was Dick Sargent, who demanded the highest salary of anyone in the cast despite having a relatively minor role.
  • No Budget: Made for a mere $270,000. According to Fiveson, the project was funded entirely by seven investors, one of them Fiveson's own father, and most of the budget went to the actors.
  • Vindicated by Cable: Clonus's theatrical release generated only modest box office returns (although, given the movie's tiny budget, enough to turn a decent profit), but the movie proved a surprise best-seller when released on VHS in the early 1980s. Producer Myrl A. Schreibman has said that the movie was particularly popular at video rental stores, where it outsold box office hits like An Officer and a Gentleman. The movie's later appearance on Mystery Science Theater 3000 further enhanced its profile and it retains a large cult following.
