• Actor-Shared Background: Pamela Adlon, like Sam, is a single mother with three daughters. Both are actors too, with an English mother and American father. They're also both half gentile and Jewish.
• Directed by Cast Member: Pamela Adlon starred as main character Sam, while she also co-created, produced and wrote much of the series.
• Fake American: Completely averted. All actors use their natural accents. A good example of Truth in Television - in bigger cities (like Los Angeles, where the show is set) there are many immigrants. For example, Sam's mother is English, as are Macy and Mer Kodis.
• Role-Ending Misdemeanor: Louis C.K., who played an integral role in writing the first two seasons, was removed from the show following his admission of sexual misconduct, ironically leaving Adlon in a similar position C.K. was in on Louie as the sole writer/director.
• Throw It In!: Apparently, Olivia Edwards (Duke) really came down with a case of the hiccups when filming the season 4 finale. It was then decided to leave them in.
• Titled After the Song: The show is named after "Better Things" by The Kinks.
• Write What You Know: Adlon's background in voiceover work comes into play regularly, with Billy West and Tom Kenny even making guest appearances.
