- Colbert Bump: Roger Ebert's very vocal defense of the film at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival gave it a popularity boost, leading major studios to pay attention to the film. MTV eventually picked up the distribution rights.
- Doing It for the Art: Justin Lin's original investors initially wanted an all-white cast led by Macaulay Culkin; worse, according to Lin, some of these investors were Asian-American. Lin said no and largely self-funded the movie, in part with a last-minute donation from MC Hammer. As Lin put it later, "It potentially could’ve been the last film I ever made. So, I decided I wanted to make a film about issues that were very important to me.”
