  • Banned in China: The movie was banned in France nearly 7 years after its release, despite being co-produced by Canal + (a French Company) and premiering at Cannes. What makes this particularly unusual is that France is home to the New French Extremity horror film movement, which was in full swing around the same time and was producing films equally as shocking and visceral! It eventually got upped from a 16 rating to an 18 rating, one of only twenty films to ever get this rating.
  • California Doubling: The beautiful countryside and woodland of North Rhine-Westphalia (specifically, those around Cologne, Rhein-Sieg-Kreis and Wuppertal) stand in for the Pacific Northwest.
  • Completely Different Title: Became Satan's Passions and Desires in Taiwan.
  • Creator Breakdown: Lars von Trier was suffering from depression when making the film, which was intended to be a coping mechanism.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The film was originally going to have a Twist Ending where it was revealed that Satan rather than God had created the universe that the film was set in (hence the title). However, von Trier's producer accidentally leaked it, making him so angry he went back and rewrote the script.
    • Eva Green originally was approached for the role of She. However, Green's agency rejected that role and it went to Gainsbourg instead.
    • Viggo Mortensen was considered for He.
    • A video game spin-off of the film was going to be made, but was cancelled when Zentropa's Video Game division went out of business.
