• Dawson Casting: Helen Mirren was twenty-two playing seventeen.
• Executive Meddling:
  • Columbia disliked Peter Sculthorpe's score, and had it replaced with one by Stanley Myers. The restored version from 2006 has the original score.
  • Eight minutes were cut for the UK release, despite the censors approving the finished version. These included the opening of Bradley and Meg in bed, and some of Cora's nudity.
• Fake Australian: James Mason as Bradley Morahan.
• Romance on the Set: James Mason later married Clarissa Kaye, who played Meg.
• Star-Making Role: For Helen Mirren.
