- Creator Backlash: John Huston was unhappy with third act, which was written and directed by another filmmaker after he'd left the film to go serve in the Army Signal Corps, saying it "strained credibility".
- Fake Nationality: All of the Japanese characters are played by non-Japanese actors, since the Japanese-American actors originally cast in the parts had been evacuated and interned after Pearl Harbor.
- Production Posse:
- John Huston reunited Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor and Sydney Greenstreet from The Maltese Falcon.
- This was the first time actors Richard Loo, Victor Sen Yung, and Philip Ahn all starred together as Japanese villains. They would appear together in similar roles several more times during World War II.
- Real Life Writes the Plot:
- The film's plot originally revolved around a planned Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. When Pearl Harbor was actually attacked by the Japanese in December 1941, the plot had to be heavily rewritten to instead focus on an attack on the Panama Canal.
- When director John Huston had to leave to go serve in the Army, he deliberately ended the 2nd act on a cliffhanger to leave his successor to solve. The studio's solution was to simply cut the entire sequence and reshoot it.
- Similarly Named Works: Warner Bros. used the same title for a 1926 silent adventure film starring Monte Blue, who has a small role in this picture. However, the plots of the two films bear no resemblance to each other.
