- Blooper:
- The captioning on the Region-2 DVD mistakenly captioned The Army Game (a series William Hartnell was doing before joining Doctor Who) as The Army Gang.
- While filming "The Daleks", director Richard Martin is first seen sitting in the production studio with Verity on his left and Mervyn Pinfield on the right. Less than half a minute later, Verity and Mervyn have swapped places.
- Dawson Casting: William Hartnell was 55 when he was cast as the Doctor. David Bradley was 71 here.
- Fake Nationality: A Scotsman (Brian Cox) playing Canadian Sydney Newman.
- Prop Recycling: In some scenes the original props from the Hartnell era were used.
- Reality Subtext: William Hartnell was keen to take the role as the Doctor because he was becoming sick of being handed nothing but "Criminals and perishing Sergent Majors" to play. Prior to this docudrama, David Bradley is primarily known as a Grumpy Old Man in two hugely popular works (and previously played such a role in Doctor Who itself). In short, Bradley is Playing Against Type as a character actor doing exactly the same.
- Separated-at-Birth Casting: Some has pointed out the close resemblance◊ between Sacha Dhawan and young Waris Hussein.
- What Could Have Been: Mark Gatiss wanted to recreate the closing moments of "The Daleks' Master Plan" episode 12, and Jean Marsh had agreed to appear as the older Sara Kingdom, but the budget wouldn't allow it. At the BFI, Mark Gatiss commented that he almost said 'sod it, close the door, let's record Marco Polo'. And there were apparently many scenes cut from the final film. Among them was Gatiss himself as Jon Pertwee. And apparently Steven Moffat (the incumbent Doctor Who show-runner at the time) as Tom Baker.
