YMMV / An Adventure in Space and Time

Go To

  • Aluminium Christmas Trees: While it may look like a bit of Artistic Licence – History done to hammer in how big Dalekmania was, the political cartoon depicting Charles De Gaulle as a Dalek actually existed.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Just before he leaves the show, Hartnell has a vision of Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa in the 2023 airing). Whether he's having a vision of the show's brilliant future and legacy, or this is the actual Eleventh or Fifteenth Doctor popping in in some sort of timey-wimey Literary Agent Hypothesis, is ambiguousnote , but either way it is the only confusingly supernatural event in an otherwise realistic docudrama.
  • Broken Base: Whether Matt Smith or Ncuti Gatwa's cameo at the end of the film is a good inclusion or not. Half of the fans think it's a lovely homage to the show's legacy and longevity, and a fitting tribute to its 50th/60th anniversaries. The other half thinks it distracts from what should be a celebration of William Hartnell's run as the character, and ends the film on an offputtingly silly note.
  • Fandom-Enraging Misconception: The film references a few that have popped up in the Doctor Who fandom over the years, including mispronunciations of the word "Dalek" and that the Daleks are not robots, but organic lifeforms in metal shells.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: A double for both David Bradley and the First Doctor. Bradley would actually later reprise the role of the First Doctor again in the actual show in "Time Twice Upon A Time",note  his role being assisting the Twelfth Doctor in his regeneration into the Thirteenth, allowing William Hartnell by proxy to usher in a groundbreaking moment in the show's history by bringing forth the first female Doctor. He would later return in "The Power of the Doctor", where he and some of the other classic Doctors help the possessed Thirteenth Doctor while she was trapped in her subconscious. Even better, David Bradley also gets the chance to play the First Doctor at Big Finish along with those who played the actors in the docudrama.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Sacha Dhawan plays Waris Hussein, one of the people behind the shows's inception. Dhawan would later appear in Series 12 as none other than one of the Doctor’s most enduring enemies, the Master. Made more hilarious in that he initally presents himself as an ally of the Doctor.
  • I Knew It!: When Ncuti Gatwa mentioned he'd filmed a scene with the First Doctor, many fans speculated he might have filmed a new version of Matt Smith's cameo at the end of this film. This proved completely correct when the film re-aired on BBC4 on the November 23 of that year
  • Narm Charm: The Future Doctor cameo is both incredibly cheesy and incredibly heartwarming.
  • Special Effect Failure: Whoever was responsible for green-screening Matt Smith into the final scene couldn't make up his mind on if he's supposed to be in front of or behind the TARDIS console between shots. Fortunately, the 2023 version of this scene with Ncuti Gatwa in Matt Smith's place corrects this with some sneaky cropping to mask the original compositing error
