Jane Eyre: The Musical is a musical adaptation of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, with music and lyrics by Paul Gordon and the book by John Caird. It began workshop in 1995 before premiering on Broadway in 2000.

The Broadway cast featured Marla Schaffel as the titular character, James Barbour as Edward Rochester, Stephen R. Buntrock as St. John Rivers, Lisa Musser as Young Jane Eyre, and Jayne Paterson as Helen Burns.


Jane Eyre includes examples of:

  • Adapted Out
    • Jane's wealthy uncle, a major plot point in the novel, is not present.
    • Miss Temple, a kind Lowood teacher who takes Jane and Helen under her wing is not in the musical.
  • Counterpoint Duet: Sirens and its reprise.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Minor example: Helen dies of typhus in the school's epidemic instead of consumption.
  • Gold Digger: Blanche Ingram only wants to marry Rochester when she believes he is rich.
