Tear Jerker / The Muppets Take Manhattan

Go To

  • "Saying Goodbye". Just...all of it. From the soft, acoustic music to the shots of Muppets hugging and leaving on various modes of transport. Sure, they reunite later, but the montage really makes you worried that, even if it was for their own good for now, the Muppets are split forever, maybe never meeting each other again. And don't get us started on the lyrics, which includes such lovely gems as:
Saying goodbye; why is it sad?
Makes us remember the good times we've had
Much more to say; foolish to try
    It's time for saying goodbye
    • And:
Somehow, I know we'll meet again
Not sure quite where, and I don't know just when
You're in my heart, so until then
    Wanna smile, wanna cry
    Saying goodbye...
    • The dominant singers in this song are Jim Henson (as Kermit and Rowlf) and Richard Hunt (as Scooter). I can't imagine being Frank Oz and listening to this song... it's got to be agonizing.
  • The first three lines of the latter verse are sung twice: first by Rowlf and Floyd in an uncertain but optimistic tone, hoping that one day, they'll be able to reunite with their friends. The second is sung by Fozzie, and from the tone of his voice, he's almost praying he can come back to Kermit, and is clearly missing his longtime friends as he's now stuck on his own journey away from Manhattan.
  • "He'll Make Me Happy". Just try to keep your eyes dry.
  • Kermit apologized for snapping at them and hoping to put it behind them, but by that point they unanimously decided to go their separate ways thinking it's for the best.
  • When the Muppets go their separate ways, they are so miserable without each other and stuck at their lousy jobs. For explanation, Fozzie is hibernating in Maine with other, bigger bears after his job didn't work out; Rowlf is working at a kennel full of other homesick dogs; The Electric Mayhem is playing polka in Pittsburgh; Scooter is a movie theater usher, and Gonzo is performing water stunts with several chickens for unimpressed crowds in Michigan. Their happiness (and relief) at the news that Kermit has finally found someone willing to put their musical on Broadway is, to say the least, not an act!
