Tear Jerker / The Art of Racing in the Rain

• Eve’s death. She lives past her 6 to 8 month prognosis and even seems to be on the road of recovery. Denny plans to move her and Zoë, both of whom were staying at Trish and Maxwell’s place, back home. Then just as Denny was in the middle of making those plans, he gets a call that Eve has died.
  • The death has impacted Enzo so greatly that he lets his animal instinct over by running away and killing a squirrel to shield himself from his grief.
• As if Denny wasn’t in as much pain, Eve’s parents demand that they have custody of Zoë. When Denny stands his ground, they bring forward Annika, infuriated over his Denny’s rejection, plants a False Rape Accusation on him.
  • Due to the above event, Zoë is forced to live with her grandparents, much to her and her father’s heartbreak.
• Denny getting beaten up by Eve’s brothers just because he refused to not attend his own wife’s funeral. Maxwell and his sons continue to demand that he leave while calling him a child molester. Trish seemly calms the tensions… but tells Denny that he should leave while also shaming him for making “advances” on Annika. Not only that, he can only briefly meet with Zoë until Denny urges her to comfort her grandparents. In the end, Denny is forced to watch the entire funeral procession from a hilltop, with only his dog, Enzo by his side. It’s only when everything is over and everyone leaves can he meet Eve’s grave. There’s Obnoxious In-Laws, but then there’s these utter bastard of a bunch in-laws.
• Even though Enzo reincarnates into a boy and reunited with Denny, his death is still sad to read about, especially considering Denny’s point of view. He holds his best friend in his arms as he dies and doesn’t know that Enzo will come back or even recognizes him when he does. For all Denny’s knows, this is the last time he will ever be with his dog.
