Alternative Character Interpretation: Were Eve's parents Well Intentioned Extremists who believed that Denny wouldn't be able to adequately care for Zoey due to his career, or are they self-centered Jerkasses who wanted Eve's child all to themselves? The novel seems to sway towards the latter interpretation, given their rude attitudes towards both Denny and Enzo, as well as not providing adequate care for Zoey. The film does Adaptational Nice Guy to them, particularly Trish.
As if Denny wasn’t in as much grief over the passing of his wife while his in-laws take custody of their daughter, but Eve’s whole family going as far as to force him not to attend her funeral is a whole new level of low. Eve’s brothers beating up Denny while accusing him of being a child molester is just too far. Denny can only watch the procession and burial at a far distance on top of a hill.
Annika, an underage girl, goes as far as to plant a False Rape Accusation on Denny just because he refused her advances, while his own wife was dying from cancer. But all she does is whine over the rejection. This whole event almost made Denny lose custody of Zoë to his in-laws, and it’s implied they don’t actually want Zoë, just to keep her away from her father and just to spite him. Fortunately Denny makes Annika see the error of her ways and drops the charges.
What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: Just because it's told from a dog's perspective doesn't mean it's family friendly. Several decidely mature things happen such as the false rape allegation against Denny and the scene where Enzo imagines Zoey's stuffed zebra sexually assaulting her other toys.

Tainted by the Preview: Fans of the book weren't pleased to hear that the film was to get a PG rating, as it would likely entail Bowdlerization of scenes from the book, namely the false rape allegation.
