Watching Annie's mother fade away as she dies from cancer. Annie is clearly distraught and crying in response.
The boys at Lucy's school vandalizing Mike Mitchell's trailer home by egging and TPing it becomes unpleasant to watch when you learn the man is actually a nice guy, but only appeared intimidating because of a traumatic event where he got shot by a robber which led him to become a recluse.
Season 2
"Nothing Endures But Change" is considered to be one of the saddest episodes of the entire series. Lucy's friend Sarah gets killed in a car accident while driving after a failed attempt to stop the car for a young pedestrian, and Sarah's sister Jenn is left hospitalized in severe condition. Sarah died only at the age of 14. When Annie goes to find Lucy and expresses thankfulness that she wasn't in the car during the accident, she breaks the news to Lucy that her friend had died, causing both Annie and Lucy to break into tears and for Annie to hug Lucy in comfort.
The tearjerker peaks when Lucy storms into Matt's bedroom while he and Mary are arguing about the car accident and once Matt tries to make the situation seem not as horrific by saying "Lucy could have been in that car", Lucy comes in distraught with tears streaming down her face, feeling that it's all her fault that Sarah died since she didn't tell anyone that Sarah would sometimes drive Jenn's car and because she thinks Sarah wouldn't have died if she and Jenn weren't going to pick her up. Her whole family watches her break down into tears in the hallway.
Lucy tells Mary that her loss isn't comparable to when Grandma died since Grandma at least lived a good life and made it to her seniorhood, while Sarah died a young girl who didn't make it far enough in life.
