  • Sue discovering that her dreams to go travelling with her family have been ruined due to Angela running away back to the USA and abandoning her father. Her phone call to Granddad is just heartbreaking.
  • Jake lying about his Chinese burns to Karen. It hits you in the gut when you realize he's had these bruises the whole episode (and possibly days before that), but is desperately hiding it.
  • Sue realising that Granddad isn't forgetting things because of his painkillers: he hasn't taken them for four days.
  • At some point in Series 2 when Granddad's dementia is getting worse, Jake asks Sue if he'll still remember who they are, after being told his memory will just keep getting worse and worse. She replies that of course he will, but you can tell that even she isn't sure. Indeed, without medication, his memory eventually deteriorates to the point he can't remember any more.
  • Pete and Granddad talking about him going into a home. Although he told Sue he was glad to go, his conversation with Pete hints he might have said that just to stop her worrying. (Thankfully he turns out to be very happy there).
  • Pete and Sue reminiscing in Series 4 over how the kids are growing up, and how eventually it'll be just them.
  • Karen brooding over her False Friend Tanya after Tanya's brother reveals she finds Karen too clingy.
  • Pete and Ben decide to go camping together and one of Ben's traps catches a rabbit. He tries methodically suggesting how they put it out of its misery... but cannot actually bring himself to do it. Pete assures him that it's okay not to kill things and that it would be best to let it go. Something is just telling that Ben has been forcing himself into the mindset that A Real Man Is a Killer... and he's only just learning to let it go.
  • The Series 5 finale. Granddad finally can't remember who Sue is. To make matters worse, his medication then kicks in and his memory comes back... after Sue leaves but before Angela arrives. Then Angela truly crosses the line by saying she wants nothing more to do with the whole thing until Granddad has finally passed away.
