Tear Jerker / iCarly (2021)

Go To

S1E1: iStart Over

  • The premiere is somber to say the least. Carly and Freddie (now in their mid-20s) have been reunited for some time, but their relationship may never be the same again with all the hardship they endured while living apart separately over the last several years, having dealt with majorly heart-wrenching plights in their early adulthood. On top of that, both Sam and Gibby are gone for good and the returning main cast is having trouble dealing with it.
    • The opening scene has Carly being dumped by her new boyfriend Beau under the impression that he was gonna propose while Freddie is revealed to be divorced (twice, actually), a tech start-up he launched failed, and he is now back to living with his mother. And she has not changed one bit.
    • There's also a scene featuring Carly and Freddie having a one-on-one heart-to-heart chat reflecting on their struggles in early adulthood as they revisit and start to rekindle their romance from scratch, wanting to be creative and while Freddie mentions that she doesn't need a partner, Carly mentions she doesn't need a partner, she needs Sam, but they both know that she has moved on with her life and went her own separate way hanging out with a motorcycle gang, an obvious allusion to Jennette's desire to not return to the show and do her own thing.
  • Millicent (the closest thing to a daughter Freddie has) makes it clear in the first episode that she doesn't consider Freddie her father, merely an estranged stepfather who adopted her and shares joint custody with his ex-wife Gwen (her biological mother), which visibly hurts him. Fortunately, the two eventually become close enough that Millicent changes her stance on this.

S1E3: iFauxpologize

  • While searching through Freddie's past social media post, she comes across an old post of him saying he never wanted kids. While it turns out that she was pretending to be sad in order to guilt him into buying her things, there's some implication that Millicent was genuinely hurt by it.

S1E11: iCan Fix It Myself

  • When Wes is unable to repair "Vin Diesel", Carly breaks down in tears. The reason why Carly is so attached to it is because she and Sam bought it together while Carly was in college. They had many good times together in the car and it helps her feel connected to Sam, who she clearly misses a lot.

S2E1: iGuess Everyone Just Hates Me

  • After their Relationship Upgrade in the previous episode, Harper and Dutch are forced to break up due to Dutch's busy schedule preventing them from giving each other the love they need. Harper opens up to Mrs. Benson, telling her that Dutch was her first true love.

S3E3: iMake New Memories

  • Carly attempts to surprise Freddie by recreating a dinner they had when Freddie came to visit Carly in Italy. Freddie isn't happy in the slightest, because this wasn't the fun evening that Carly remembers. He says it was the worst night of his life. Freddie was planning to ask Carly to be his girlfriend, but when an elderly man offered to take a picture of Carly and Freddie, thinking they were a couple, Carly laughed and said they were just friends. This broke Freddie's heart, causing him to leave due a "family emergency", when in reality he spent the night at the airport until he could go home and he vowed to never let Carly string him along again. In Carly's defense, she laughed because the man was making her uncomfortable, and she feels as though Freddie is only being friends with her as a "consolation prize". Both of them are on the verge of tears as years of bottled-up resentment surfaces. Fortunately, this leads to Carly finally confessing her feelings for Freddie and they not only kiss, but decide to become an actual couple.

S3E3: iHave A Proposal

  • Mrs. Shay, Carly and Spencer's mom, who has never been mentioned up to this point is revealed to have walked out on the family at some point before the original series. Spencer mentions how bringing up their mother has always upset Carly in the past, and Carly realizes that her stress regarding Freddie proposing to her is because she worries that she might do the same thing to Freddie.
  • While it is meant to be taken as a joke, Spencer says that he also has the same worries as Carly, which is why he has avoided marriage in favor of pursuing emotionally unavailable women.
