Tear Jerker / Grizzly Man

Go To

  • Timothy grieving for the death of a fox cub. While it's a bit Narmy, it's clear that he truly cared about the foxes. (However, the effect is somewhat dampened by Timothy cursing at a fly landing on the fox's body, because it's "disrespectful" for it to feed in front of him.)
  • Watching Herzog listen to the audio tape of Timothy and Amie's deaths is agonizing. If you watch carefully, you can see his hands shaking, and after the tape is turned off, he appears to be wiping away tears.
    • As soon as the tape is shut off, Jewel (Timothy's ex-girlfriend, who owns the tape) breaks down sobbing. Even without hearing the contents of the tape, it breaks her.
    • Jewel says she still owns it; she now keeps it in a bank safe-deposit box. However, she has never listened to it, nor let anyone else listen to it, since the documentary was made. Herzog recommended that the tape be outright destroyed, and adamantly refused when the film's executives wanted to play it in the film.
    • Herzog's warning:
Herzog: Jewel, you must never listen to this.
Jewel: (through tears) I know, Werner. I never will.
Herzog: (Beat) And you must never look at the photos that I have seen at the coroner's office.
Jewel: I will never look at them.
Jewel: (sobbing whisper) They said it was bad.
  • The Don Edwards song "Coyotes" playing towards the end, a song about an old cowboy who can't bring himself to accept that the days of the Wild West are long gone and have been replaced by the 20th-century industrial age. All too fitting for a man like Treadwell who couldn't cope with modern society and saw nature as his only refuge, which sadly ended up killing him.
Well he cursed all the roads and the oil men,
    And he cursed the automobile,
Said this is no place for an hombre like I am,
In this new world of asphalt and steel.
