  • The party's arrival in Falgabard quickly reveals exactly why Nacht is so cold—he's not The Stoic, he's been in Heroic Safe Mode ever since becoming its Sole Survivor. The castle's population has been reduced to tormented ghosts who vocally decry Sigurd as a traitor or a coward. Oh, and Sigurd is Nacht's father.
  • After the final battle with Baugauven in the Dark Knight chapter, the party realizes that "Graham" is an empty suit of armor controlled by the ghost of Sigurd's friend and that both of them died before they could warn their country of Avalon's ambush, resulting in the deaths of almost the entire kingdom. As one, the other realize exactly why Nacht has been so cold and stoic towards them since their journey began—even Alba is apologetic and moves to comfort him, but all they can do is leave him be with his feelings.
  • Matoya smells a rat when the battle in the Imperial forward camp is too easy. She and the party rush back to the Desert Moon hideout to find them slaughtered to a man... thanks to Nacht and the others giving the password to the pub's owner, who turns out to be an Imperial spy. If that wasn't bad enough, rebel leader Azhar reveals that he's Matoya's son in all-but-name when he dies in her arms. It's actually Alba who turns serious and says that they Must Make Amends for the deadly mistake that they made.
  • Sarah's reunion with Gawain in the Paladin chapter. To start with, he's fallen from the proud knight we saw in the flashback to a miserable alcoholic. The Warriors of Light run into him mid-bender, so he's too plastered to immediately recognize Sarah. And as if that isn't bad enough, he proceeds to sexually harass her. After he stumbles out the door, she's left shaking.
  • Vata performing a Heroic Sacrifice by absorbing the Dark Flow so that it will have a physical form to defeat. The transformation is clearly excruciating, with half his body overtaken by the dark flames that formed the weapons of Nil and his face locked in a pained grimace as he grips his transformed arm. He finally confesses that he too is the Sole Survivor of an Imperial atrocity and had nearly given up hope of revenge until he met the party—and begs them to kill him quickly before his mind is overtaken and he becomes fully possessed. Soon after this, the black flames claim him completely—and unlike most possessed foes in the series, he doesn't get a Dying as Yourself moment after the battle is won.
