Tear Jerker / Crash Thompson

Go To

  • Any time he goes into his struggles of living in a fundamental Christian home, especially when he explains in depth in his "TOP 10 FAVORITE BANDS" video on the spot for Bad Religion and while discussing "Shallow By Thy Game" in the One Hot Minute review, it's hard not to feel like him too if you've felt dissolute with faith.
  • His reaction and video post on the death of Chester Bennington. Seeing Crash be so upset and shaken by Chester's death (along with his uncomfortable tone in regards to his review on One More Light) is bad enough but for him to admit he too struggled and even attempted suicide is heartbreaking to say the least.
I put a loaded shotgun in my mouth and pulled the trigger. The only reason I'm even here today is because that gun misfired.
  • His cover of "Purple Rain" in light of the death of Prince.
  • His review of is somber to say the least, especially when Crash states that he "still can't believe he is gone".
  • The somber speech as to why Weezer was (at the time) dead to him during the Hurley review in The Rise and Fall of Weezer series: He explains that while Hurley was So Okay, It's Average, the album itself was not enough to redeem the band in his eyes, who he felt had long stopped being the band he grew up with and had simply become Weezer In Name Only and even stated he created the series as a way to close the book on a band he had long been a fan of. Keep in mind: Crash has followed Weezer from the beginning with Blue, imagine being in his shoes as your favorite band falls from grace. Luckily for him, Weezer proved him wrong in the end.
    • Then, unfortunately, things got worse afterwards as Crash was not as impressed with The White Album and admitted that he cared very little about Pacific Daydream, with him overall finding it to be a very boring and forgettable album, he sounded very depressed that Weezer was getting back into bad habits (doing yearly album releases again) and said it was almost as lazy as Make Believe. Although these feelings were sort-of mediated by the reception of their Black album, although Crash did end up putting Teal and Black on the WORST OF 2019 list and made it clear he wasn't going to take Weezer seriously anymore.
    • During Crash's informal, spur-of-the-moment take on OK Human at the end of this stream where he showcased his vinyl collection, Crash admitted that he felt that he was ready to "move on" from Weezer and that despite the record being a slight improvement over its predecessors, it was not enough to reignite the former passion he had for the band.
    • However, just a few days after Crash's informal review on OK Human, Rivers Cuomo publicly announced that Weezer was currently working on four more albums to be released after Van Weezer. This infuriated Crash to the point where he posted an angry rant on Twitter saying that the only way a band can release six studio albums in one whole year is if they don't care, and that all the albums will just be devoid of any substance. However, upon panic from his followers upon whether or not he would put Weezer in the bin, he followed it up by saying that he is not doing that, but just will not talk about them anymore (which he described as "about as close you can get without being in there proper"). Some time later, he posted a video on TikTok saying he could no longer stand Weezer, and he felt he had grown out of them. Pretty upsetting for those who got into Weezer through his videos.
    • Eventually, in another TikTok, Crash later admitted that he really regrets doing The Rise and Fall of Weezer in hindsight, not only because they no longer reflect how he truly feels about Weezer today, but also because he hates the fact that he made the reviews so heavily focused on dumb storylines and unfunny skits to the point where they're just cringeworthy and dated to him, even going so far as to calling the series "Channel Awesome-y" in places (see below). In fact, he went even further in mentioning how embarrassing the series is to him, saying that there were times where he just outright wanted to delete the whole series from his channel altogether.
  • Crash's depressed and somber tone in the GDR3 retrospective due to how boring and bland the trilogy albums are on him, prompting to him to leave Lil D.Va to fight off the sentient albums and meet up with a friend discussing how much he's wants to give up on everything following how horrible 2017 is... You just wanna hug him.
  • The ending of the WORST OF 2019 list, where Crash laments a bit about his number one spot. Where he drops his "Rock Critic" persona and makes it clear the Number One spot really pissed him off. The result ended up being a lengthy tirade towards The Nostalgia Critic's album/review to The Wall on how insulting, pathetic, and disregarding it was to not only the source material (which Crash believes Doug intentionally ignored the real message since it hit too close to home for him) but also as an excuse to whine about the internet drama surrounding him. Crash also mentions how he used to look up to Doug Walker and wished to be a part of Channel Awesome, but after what he saw, he wishes to never be like Doug, so much so that the video ends with the confirmation that Crash was ending the "The Rock Critic" branding and simply calling his channel "Crash Thompson" now. End of an Era indeed.
  • At the end of his WORST ALBUMS OF 2020 list, Crash makes a lengthy tirade in a similar fashion to the aforementioned Nostalgia Critic's The Wall rant against the #1 pick for 2020, that being F8 by Five Finger Death Punch. In his initial review in the FIMI Q1 2020 video, Crash only gave the album a 2/5 rating since he believed that it was marginally better than Got Your Six and And Justice for None, and even clarified in this video that it was originally only going to show up as #2 on the list with Danzig Sings Elvis being the #1 pick before choosing to swap places on the list. The reason? The music video for "Living the Dream", a video whose imagery compared wearing a face mask during the COVID-19 pandemic to totalitarian government regime, including a Nancy Pelosi-inspired political figure praising mask-wearers for being "compliant" and presenting them with a button displaying the Communist hammer-and-sickle emblem. Even though guitarist Zoltan Bathory claimed that the message of the video was intended to be a satire on government hypocrisy, Crash brushed that off and showed comments made on the video that completely contradicted Bathory's defense for it, several of which endorse political violencenote , and even went so far as to blame Five Finger Death Punch themselves for discouraging their fans from following basic safety guidelines to avoid getting COVID-19, considering the number of new cases in the United States rose higher than ever following the release of the video. The fact that he already binned Five Finger Death Punch because of the music itself was enough for him initially, but the sheer likelihood that the album got people killed out of the band's contempt for the health of their own fans is enough to break the heart of himself and everyone watching.
  • In a very brief moment compared to the other examples listed, in the Worst Albums of 2021 video, Crash takes a shot at the two albums tied in his #6 spot (The Revenge of Hobo Johnson and Hobo Johnson Alienates His Fanbase by Hobo Johnson) with a rather deeply heart-breaking reference when he says Johnson was clearly going through a "Spoony-esque breakdown" while making those two albums.
    • Or, for that matter, the entirety of both his Worst Albums and Best Albums list when he describes how 2021 was when he officially lost all desire to review new music on his channel entirely due to the overwhelming amount of new releases being put out to the point where he outright intentionally missed out on a majority of them for his own mental health. So much so that he spent the beginning of the Best Albums video giving a short speech about how he was so burnt out that he almost completely lost interest in music as a whole, and he had so little time for new music that his Best and Worst albums were less a ranking of his favorite/least favorite albums of the year, but more just rankings of the few albums he heard in 2021 that actually left any kind of impression on him. As a result, he went and retired both the New Release Review format and the FIMI format permanently and decided to save all his thoughts on new albums for his year-end countdown videos so that he'll be able to finally have the time he needs to truly form an honest opinion without the pressure of being put under a deadline.
