Formula Breaking Episode / 'Tis Time for "Torture," Princess

Go To

The story of 'Tis Time for "Torture," Princess is for the most part Strictly Formula: the Princess gets "tortured" using various Mundane Luxuries, usually Food as Bribe, with her trying to resist spilling secrets by claiming how her strict warrior upbringing and accomplishments mean she's strong enough, only to give in and blab a secret because her strict upbringing made her more susceptible to their kindness, followed by the Hell-Lord discarding the secret due to various trivial reasons. However, throughout the manga's run, it has deviated from that formula when it sees fit in order to keep things fresh:

  • In chapter 14, the Hell-Lord decides to put Tortura to the test by having her "torture" him.
  • In chapter 15, Tortura decides to "torture" the Princess's Talking Weapon Ex.
  • In chapter 27, the story foregoes the "torture" entirely in favor of the Hell-Lord and Mao-Mao spending the day together.
  • Subverted in chapters 33-34; the story looks like it's going to be about the Hell-Lord and Mao-Mao at her school's sports day, but it turns out the Hell-Lord has a "torture" in mind for the Princess.
  • Chapter 36 involves another "torturing" of the Hell-Lord, this time with the Oni sisters needing to get a secret out of him during a promotion exam.
  • Chapter 38 again foregoes the "torture", this time having Tortura enjoying hotel food while on a business trip.
  • Chapter 41 foregoes the "torture" to have Mao-Mao make cookies with her parents' help.
  • In chapter 43, Tortura takes care of the Princess while she's ill, putting the "torture" on hold.
  • In chapter 44, the Princess is invited to the Hellhorde's "great gathering", which this time involves potato-digging.
  • While chapter 46 does include a "torture" session, it starts and ends in two panels, with the majority of the chapter being the Princess and Giant enjoying a peaceful and relaxing day laying on the ground outside.
  • In chapter 49, the Hell-Lord, the Princess and Ex get zapped into another world, and return after the Hell-Lord easily stomps its ruler the Black Monarch.
  • Chapter 50 only has a "torture" session offscreen in the final panel, most of the chapter being a basketball match between the Princess and the Hell-Lord's teams.
  • Chapter 53 sees Mao-Mao creating a paper city with her parents' help.
  • Chapter 55 is about Tortura helping the Princess with a sty in her eye, with the "torture" off-screen in the penultimate page.
  • Chapter 56 has the Princess enjoying a bath with Giant before making rolled omelets with Tortura, with no "torture" happening at all, despite Ex anticipating when it might happen.
  • In chapter 58, the Princess helps Mao-Mao practice skipping.
  • Chapter 60 is Mao-Mao's recital.
  • Chapter 62 doesn't have an actual "torture"; instead, the Princess is having a lucid dream, and decides she can give in to all the dream-"tortures" she wants, completely unaware she's talking in her sleep, blabbing all the secrets she's revealing in her dream, and Tortura is listening.
  • In chapter 63, Inki plans to "torture" the Princess by watching a movie and stopping it at the good part... except she's so worried about the Princess not liking the movie, she completely forgets, and they watch it through to the end, then watch it again because the Princess liked it so much, and Inki only remembers she was supposed to get a secret when Tortura asks her about it afterwards.
  • In chapter 65, the Hell-Lord and Louch fight, before ultimately bonding over anime.
  • Chapter 66 is another Tortura-focused chapter, this time showing her stopping at a rest stop while driving overnight.
  • Chapter 68 has Giant give the Princess a head spa, with the "torture" again off-screen in the final panel.
  • In chapter 69, the Princess successfully resists spilling a secret... but Ex is so depressed by how she managed to resist, remembering how she never had any friends who'd ever invite her to play, he blabs instead.
  • Chapter 73 again doesn't have an actual "torture"; Vanilla invites the Princess ice skating because she wants them to play together, and the Princess mistakes it for a "torture".
  • Chapter 75 yet again focuses on the Hell-Lord, this time featuring him getting a mouth ulcer that forces him to take a break from work while he recovers.
  • Chapter 76, meanwhile, is about the Princess and her "torturers" taking time off from "torture" to go bowling while the Hell-Lord's off.
  • Chapter 79 starts with an attempt at "torture" by way of bicycle racing, but when it turns out the Princess has never ridden a bike before, it switches to being about the demons helping her learn how to do so, with it ending on the Princess and demons simply enjoying riding around, the "torture" ending up completely forgotten about.
  • In chapter 84, the "torture" was already finished off-screen, so Princess joins Giant for a post-bath trip to get some ice cream, during which they enjoy a chat together, along with Giant teaching the Princess how to enjoy just going out for a leisurely stroll when there's nothing to do.
  • Chapter 86 is about the Hell World Martial Arts Tournament, with not even a mention of any plans to conduct any form of "torture".
  • Chapter 87 is a subversion; Tortura stops the "torture", this time involving fondant au chocolat, after the Princess resists, and lets her eat some. However, after seeing Tortura enjoying her reheated fondant, the Princess wants hers reheated too, and Tortura agrees... in return for a secret. After all, she might have stopped the "torture", but that's not the same thing as admitting defeat. The Princess folds.
  • In chapter 88, Tortura calls off the "torture" so they can play in the snow.
  • Chapter 91 focuses on Vanilla trying to invite the Princess to a festival, and the only mention of "torture" is her arriving at the Princess's cell right after it's over.
