  • The airport bus passes by some hotels with recognisable brand names, such as the Ramada, the Thistle and the Holiday Inn. Manda later spots a Best Western from the window of hers and Kylah’s room.
  • The narration references the work of Heraclitus of Ephesus and his ideas about the shape of heaven.
  • Manda’s has "Funkytown" by Lipps Inc as her ringtone.
  • Kay, Kylah and Chell use some Durex condoms purchased from Boots to draw lots in order to decide who will share with Manda for the night.
  • Kylah refers to the elderly woman who hands her the condom she dropped as being "as ancient as old Rose in Titanic."
  • After they’re done checking into the hotel, Manda loudly claims that the receptionist was "more gay than Brian from Big Brother". Brian Dowling was the winner of the show’s second UK series.
  • The outfit Chell puts on to go down to the Flight Deck bar includes a Kookai dress and Russell & Bromley heels.
  • Kay wonders if Ava might be "a bit gorgeous-looking but dim", not unlike Tim Nice But Dim.
  • Manda mentions to Ava that Kay should have tried out for Popstars and could have easily ended up in Hear’Say.
  • Chell claims she didn’t mind splitting up with her boyfriend after being pressured to do so by Manda, since “it wasn’t Johnny Depp [she] was going out with”. Kylah later jokes that if they ran into him at the airport he’d hopefully have “left Vanessa Paradis home with the wee girl.”
  • The conversation turning to Ava being able to speak French prompts a mention of Moulin Rouge! and a raucous rendition of Lady Marmalade, with Chell jumping up on the hotel bed and imitating some of the choreography from the music video.
  • When Ava tells the group about the tiny Oxfordshire village, Manda asks if it’s like The Vicar of Dibley.
  • Kylah never had any interest in competing in Popstars. She instead talks about how Marianne Faithfull was a recording artist and hanging out with The Rolling Stones when she was still a teenager. She mentions Candy Givens,Betty Davis, Maggie Bell, Sandy Denny and Grace Slick performing at Woodstock as artists that she admires.
  • Manda would like to be on Ibiza Uncovered or Big Brother.
  • Manda mentions The Final Countdown and songs by Roxette as music that she likes.
  • Kylah describes the control pants that Manda wears as "Bridget Jones granny knickers".
  • Manda wants to eat at Pizza Hut when they get to the airport on Saturday morning. She also mentions that self-catering in Benidorm is a good option since they have "Mackers", Burger King and KFC
  • The girls spend some time at the South Terminal retail village which hosts a Boots, a La Senza, a Bodyshop and a Sunglass Hut. Ava gets herself a coffee from Caffe Nero.
  • All the television in the Gatwick Village Inn are tuned to Sky News.
  • Manda read “most” of "Harry Potter and The Philosophies Stone".
  • Manda harangues Kay for not eating anything at McDonalds by claiming that she’s so skinny that she’d "scare Kate Moss".
  • Manda spies a Starbucks, a Garfunkel’s and a Pizza Express while she’s off phoning her dad.
  • Manda claims that Shelly thinks she’s Ally McBeal because she has an admin job in the solicitor’s office in the Port.
  • On holiday in Magaluf, Shelly McCrindle tried to chat up a Spanish guy who claimed to be a rapper, but in fact worked at a suitcase wrapping station, and according to Manda, started going on about "M&M’s-Ice-Vanilla-Cube-T".
  • Chell once had a man who she thought sounded like "Victor Mildrew" come into the tourist office asking about tickets for a new theatre in Inverness he’d heard about on Radio Scotland and talking to her about Macbeth.
  • The Guardian is Ava’s newspaper of choice, which she buys from a WH Smith. Manda says that she doesn’t much like newspapers, save for occasionally glancing at the News of the Screws, the Sun or the Mail when she comes across them, although she’s not much interested in “Gordon Blair” and politics. She much prefers to read Heat magazine.
  • An Airbus is mentioned as taking off while Manda, Chell and Kay ride the monorail. Once they reach the North Terminal they come across some Thyssen escalators.
  • Retail outlets in the North Terminal include Impulse, Costa Coffee, Monsoon and Accessorize and a Nine West, as well as an arcade with Sega machines.
  • Similarly to the receptionist at the Meridian, Manda complains about the barman there being gay, according to her at least, which prompts a mention of Village People and the YMCA.

  • Kylah jokes about Sean’s father wanting Sean to have a Rangers tattoo on his arse.

  • When Manda falls asleep at the Village Inn, Kylah asks if she’s dead, and quips that a Weekend at Bernie's escapade will be the next disaster on the list for them to deal with after Manda losing her passport. Finn quotes Good Morning, Vietnam when Manda wakes up.
  • The Hilton at the airport has a hairdresser’s called "British Hairways." This prompts Manda to mention that there’s an Indian restaurant in Fort William called Poppadom Preach.
  • Manda mentions Lancôme featuring in her makeup collection.
  • While they’re in the car in Surrey, they pass Lingfield Racecourse. Manda mentions that horseracing is "all big posh birds in silly hats like Lady Di", which prompts Chell to ask that they not mention her while they’re driving fast in a car where they don’t have enough seatbelts for everyone.
  • On the drive to Hever Castle, there are mentions of John Travolta, Scientology and The Railway Children.

  • Manda says that one of the traffic marshalls at Hever Castle looks like Moby.
  • Manda sees Hever Castle and says that she would live there if she won the lottery or if she were a Spice Girl. The latter was probably inspired by David and Victoria Beckham’s wedding taking place at Luttrellstown Castle in Ireland in July 1999.
  • Finn jokes about Ava not wanting to catch any sun while they’re out in the castle grounds because she wants to "woo the squire from the next county" like a Jane Austen character.
  • Kylah’s interest in sport only extends as far as watching Gladiators.
  • Finn mentions seeing the Glastonbury set hanging out on the grounds at Hever Castle.
  • Manda complains that Kay and Finn's discussion of Ava's house sounds likes something from "Antique Roadshows".
