Edmund McMillen's games commonly have enough instances of a Shout-Out in them to merit separate pages, and Mewgenics is possibly the greatest example of this, just due to the sheer amount of them.

Cat Names
In early 2023, Tyler Gladiel published a poll where any Twitter user could submit possible names for the cats that may show up in the game. As a result, there's probably too many references to count (to wit, at the time of writing there are nearly two-thousand confirmed names, and that's only the ones already processed). Here's a definitively non-exhaustive list of the ones that are pop-culture references.
- Garfield, naturally.
- The Great Catsby
Skills
- Metronome, an active skill that randomly chooses and then executes any skill that can be learnt by a cat, is a reference to the Pokémon move of the same name.
- The name of the My Leg! passive skill is a clear reference to the Running Gag involving that phrase from Spongebob Squarepants, and the skill itself even activates when that cat breaks all four of their legs.
Enemies
- The Expy With No Name shows up in the desert area as a black bipedal cat with a ragged poncho and hat along with his trademark displeasured expression. He's not quite as stoic, however, as he will crack a wicked grin before firing his gun.
- One burly, beaten up feline foe is called Popeye.
- A duo of enemies who can turn into each other are called Jekyll and Hyde.
Bosses
- The Radical Rat is an evil mouse who pelts your party with mouse-faced ordnance while wearing a huge grin and sunglasses- in the splitting image of another rodent boss from Super Mario Bros. 2. Also, the explosions he creates are shaped like a plus sign.
