Being a Pastiche of '80s Cyberpunk, Mega City Force includes quite a few references to sci-fi and action films of the decade, among other allusions.

- One of the guns is an Automatic Pulse Rifle.
- Another gun is a Flechette Shotgun.
- The Noisy Plasma Pistol is a pretty obvious recreation of the Noisy Cricket, to the point of having insane recoil.
- Engineer's unlockable weapon is the Fusion Cutter, which fires three plasma beams in a tight line.
- Mercenary's starting weapon, the Custom Blaster, is a dead ringer for Han Solo's iconic DL-44 blaster.
- The Energy Sword is very obviously just a lightsaber.
- Janitor's unlockable weapon is a unique shotgun simply called "Boomstick".

- The file for the Butcher enemy includes the line "Meat's back on the menu, boys!"
- Golem's file mentions that "He will, he will rock you!"
