The Toys That Made Us is a Documentary series by Brian Volk-Weiss.

The series explores the history of some of the most popular toy lines, ranging from how they first came into existence, the trials and opposition they faced in just getting off the ground, and the various incarnations they've had over the course of their timelines.

Originally made for only eight episodes, the show then got greenlit for a third season, and changed its intro accordingly.

The series debuted on Netflix on December 22nd, 2017. It also has a Spin-Off, The Movies That Made Us.


The Toys That Made Us contains examples of:

  • Deadpan Snarker: the narrator and interviewers fill this role with joy.
  • It Will Never Catch On: Quite a few IPs faced this rejection from multiple companies before finally getting off the ground.
  • Narrator: A role filled by Donald Ian Black.
  • Talking Heads: There are many interviews in each episode with people who were involved with the development of certain toylines.
